This one starts with a story. A few days ago, I posted my vacation photos on Facebook.
My mom commented, “you are so pretty”.
I replied, “aww, thanks, Mom!”
Then she replied, “I don’t think I have ever seen a bad picture of you”.
Aww. Isn’t my mom a sweetheart? I thought (although, didn’t reply)… “Of course you’ve never seen a bad picture of me!”
And do you know why? No, it’s not because I’m actually stunningly beautiful or have a photographer as a husband. I’ll let you in on my secret:
Simple, right?
You see, the internet is a tricky place. It’s easy to get lulled into thinking that your friends are constantly on vacation or that everyone else has a photographer on staff to snap shots of their latest finished object. But, it’s not so. We all occasionally look like a hen took up roost in our hair.
And as for project photos… man, I take some awful ones! I once heard a photographer say that the trick to photography isn’t necessarily taking good pictures (although, you have to do that too!), but taking lots of pictures.
For example, this week, I sewed lots of project bags, and I was working to get a lovely shot of me opening and closing the bag. In the end, I grabbed some good ones:
For those 2 good ones, there were LOTS of bad ones. Like this one:
It’s actually quite difficult to snap a shot of yourself using both hands to open a bag! This one’s blurry and not even getting the bag in the shot!
So what I’m saying is this: think your FO photos are icky? Don’t despair! Just take more of them! Don’t get lulled into thinking the rest of us are nabbing that ‘perfect shot’ on the first try… it takes oodles!
Thanks for stopping by and reading!

It’s true! I’m still working on the “holding my camera under my chin with the time set” balancing act so I can get pictures of both hands while riding the bus.
I can only imagine what the other passengers think!
wait… why are you taking photos on the bus?!?
I have to try out to take a photograph of me and my two hands once I have figured out how to hold the camera and push the button. :-)
Great advice! I take a bunch of photos and end up deleting most of them. I don’t know what I did before digital photography.
I saw your pics the other day and the first thing I thought was, “gee, I wonder how she does that with no hands!?”
