Do you remember the rainbow-colored locker hooked bath mat that I made? It was beautiful, it was comfortable, it was practical…
… it was, unfortunately, not machine washable. It was a bit silly of me, but I didn’t give tossing it into the machine a second thought- since the fabric I used was 100% cotton, I knew it would be alright. I didn’t count on the backing falling apart!
But, please don’t despair! There’s good news! You know that I’m a big fan of frogging… so I unraveled the rug completely so that I could reuse the fabric I had put together.

It makes a beautiful skein, don’t you think?
So, now I’m knitting a bath mat… I don’t think this one will fall apart! I’ll keep you posted with updates… and I’ll also write a post sometime soon about how to make “fabric yarn” by splicing together strips of fabric. It’s great for a multi-colored project!

It’s nice to see that you can recycle the yarn. So what kind of backing are you using to prevent this type of mishap in the future?
I haven’t found a washable locker hooking backing yet… but I’ll definitely find one before I do another rug!
I just felt compelled to write when I saw this. You can prevent your rug from unraveling by doing a couple of things:
Fold the canvas over at least 4 squares.
Use your sewing machine and tapestry thread to zig zag a stitch around the folded area to secure before you locker hook.
Wash only on a gentle cycle and drip dry. Hope this helps!

That sounds like great advice! Will do next time :)
thanks!
