About FreshStitches

The idea for FreshStitches began in 2008 when crochet designer, Stacey Trock, noticed a distinct lack of patterns for big and cuddly stuffed animals. A handful of adorable designs later- FreshStitches was born! Since then, FreshStitches patterns have become legendary for their cuteness, detailed instructions and step-by-step photos. Using the abundance of help and information in the patterns, numerous crocheters have crocheted a FreshStitches animal as their first crochet project! ...more

Get creative with color!

I’m sure you already know this… but you don’t have to use the same colors used in the sample of a pattern! The sample is just a suggestion, and while it’s probably a great one… you can pick whatever colors you’d like! So experiment!

Similar Color Pairs

Similar colors are ones that “go together”… you can spot them because they occur together on the color wheel! I try to keep the colors I use together in the same tone: brights with another bright color or putting a subdued pair together.

For my stipe study shawl, I used grey and teal- two colors that fit together nicely!

This Nelson the Owl sports a grey and blue combo as well.. so cute!

Contrasting Color Pairs

Contrasting colors are colors that appear opposite the color wheel… but even though they contrast, it doesn’t mean they can’t go together!

I think orange and blue work together fantastically in this owl… the contrasting colors make each color pop!

I used the same contrasting duo when I crocheted my manu cardigan… pink and yellow pair together just as nicely!

A Rainbow of Color

You don’t have to stick with 2 colors… you can use a whole rainbow!

Notice that all of the colors I used in this caterpillar are of the same tone, which keeps them from being a mis-mash.

In this monster, I stuck with super-bright colors… what a fun guy!

What color combos are you going to try? It doesn’t matter if your color selections are similar, contrasting or rainbow-y… have some fun with color!

I try to look at multicolored animals, and birds in particular to see what “goes”. Your rarely see a “bad” combo in nature.
