Everywhere I go, I try to scope out yarn shops… so when I was visiting Bern, Switzerland, the first thing I did was head to the tourist office and ask them to point me to one (I know what you’re thinking… tsk, tsk for not finding the shop online, beforehand!) She gave me this map (they’re terribly friendly in those tourist offices), and Bastelzentrum is the X on the left:
Bastelzentrum isn’t what us Americans think of as a ‘yarn store’: it’s more like a craft store with yarns, puffy paints, little wooden shapes and the like.
But, don’t think that this is a Big Box Craft store like JoAnn’s or Michael’s- Bastelzentrum has the good stuff. It stocks a whole lot of yarn, including a lot of the super-awesome European brands.
I was particularly drawn to the Lang Jawoll Magic Degrade (which I hadn’t seen in the US before).
You’ll also find patterns, needles, and samples of the various yarns made up in the store.
So, if you’re in Bern, stop by! It’s right across the street from the train station, so it doesn’t require much of a detour. Keep in mind, though, that they don’t take all American credit cards, so come prepared with cash.
