The idea for FreshStitches began in 2008 when crochet designer, Stacey Trock, noticed a distinct lack of patterns for big and cuddly stuffed animals. A peek into the process: designing a chicken!

A week ago, I received a commission to design a crocheted chicken. I LOVE custom orders (particularly from super-nice, non-control-freak customers!) because it’s a chance for me to be creative in a direction I wouldn’t ordinarily take.

So… you wanna see how I design a crochet chicken?

The first step was to find out what my customer had in mind (‘chicken’ can conjure up lots of different images!). My customer gave me some specifications: a gold-colored, large chicken (so that it could double as a decorative pillow) that was plump and cuddly.

So, I went looking at chicken photos for inspiration, and found this one:

LOVE this chicken! She’s round/plump, and the simplicity of her features could easily be translated into crochet.

The next step was to draw up a sketch, and sent it off for approval…

along with a picture of the yarn colors I was thinking of using:

Then… success! My customer loved the sketch… with only one tweak: to make the head distinct from the body and less ‘egg-like’. My next step was to plan each piece that I was going to crochet:

And now I’m crocheting! Check out the chicken’s body:

What do you think? I love her! She’s about 15″ tall… and she’s going to be awesome!

I’ll keep you posted on her progress!
